My favorite song #10: «Gimme Shelter» - Rolling Stones (1969)

This song makes itself known right away: the shaky, shimmering guitar leads, whose catchiness  is imbued with a feeling of impending doom. The eerie, high, wordless vocals and dramatic piano that preface the verse add to the feeling that something dreadful is approaching just over the horizon.

Let It Bleed for me is the band's first genuine classic album. It was the album that lived up to their billing as the greatest rock and roll band on earth in the late sixties. By this time the Stones had released the great Beggars Banquet album, which is a great album, albeit not a classic but a pivotal record in the band's career, where country rock was added to their usual rock/blues and a few classic rock singles such as "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Honkey Tonk Woman".

Let It Bleed kicks off with one of my favourite Stones songs, the harrowing classic "Gimme Shelter". There could not have been a better song to have opened this album. The album closes with the epic "You Cant Always Get What You Want" which is the Stone's "Hey Jude". Addition of the horn was fantastic but the choir is a little overbearing towards its closure. Underneath its epicness lies perhaps one of the best songs from the Jagger/Richards team.

My favorite album #2: Transformer - Lou Reed (1972)

Lou Reed staring from the cover of this album like Frankenstein in mascara gives us a feeling we are going to be in for a rough ride of the heavy metal kind. Nothing could be further from the truth. David Bowie was brought in to produce the album, adding a glam-rock feel to Reed's tougher street smart sound. This, along with a strong set of songs, would give Reed his greatest commercial success with Transformer and also give him his lone Top 20 hit in "Walk on the Wild Side."

One of the great things about this album is how the music is so sweet and somewhat like show tunes and the lyrics are so subtly deviant and oh so clever. Take for example the song vicious. Here are a few selected lines from that song:

"You hit me with a flower
You do it every hour
Ohh, baby you're so vicious"

But Lou Reed does not stop there as he brings up the lyric a notch or two a few lines later.

"Hey, why don't you swallow razor blades
You must think I'm some kinda gay blade
But baby, you're so vicious"

One of my favorite songs is Perfect Day. And it is a love song (if a some what twisted one) with a swelling chorus

"Oh it's such a perfect day,
I'm glad I spent it with you.
Oh such a perfect day,
You just keep me hanging on,
You just keep me hanging on."

On the surface it seems so wholesome but the perfect day includes drinking sangria in the park as well as the wonderfully twisted line

"You made me forget myself.
I thought I was someone else,
Someone good."

It is an incredible album well worth owning and savoring.

I'm On call at the neurosurgical department this X'mas..

Question: Why is it called a building when it’s already been built?

My favorite song #9 - «My Iron Lung» - Radiohead (1995)

"My Iron Lung" is another one of my favorite songs. It has that instantly recognisable opening which runs again through the choruses that just twists and snakes its way around the lyrics. The way those lyrics are arranged is also very catchy and the song breaks out into a really heavy rocker near the second minute.

Personally, The Bends was my introduction to the band in the mid -00's... and I'm glad it was. Maybe about 10 years too late, but hey - it's never too late right?

After the success of their debut album "Pablo Honey," Radiohead returned in 1995 with the highly-anticipated "The Bends." It's brilliant, complex, mature, controlled but so fluid. Stylistically, it's become one of my favorite albums. There's something so powerful and intense about the stripped down, simple and raw style of this album. Not a whole lot of layers or effects. Overall, just great composition and candid, graceful delivery from each instrument and track. Of course, Thom's vocals are incredible as well. But that goes without saying.

Intense naturopplevelser

Hva kan man si? Noen sine naturopplevelser er rett og slett mer intense enn andres. Potensielt forsterkes de ved inntak av diverse aktive stoffer.... (NB: Videoen blir bare sykere og sykere...)

Problemer for festbrillemakerne...
